Training Puppies at Home
You feel excited with your new puppy, but having it at home may not be as fun as you expected. Caring for a puppy is just like nurturing a baby—you have to feed and clean their mess. The only difference is that puppies cannot wear nappies, because they need to be trained about proper elimination. House-training your dog is important if you do not want your home to look messy and smell weird. This is quite challenging, especially for stubborn breeds such as the Maltese.
The best time to house-train your puppy is the moment it sets its feet on your floors. You can improvise a wide area inside your home by building a simple fence. Your puppy should stay there all the time, except during play sessions. You have to cover the floors with old newspapers and scrap sheets. Your dog will have to excrete its wastes at a certain area. Oftentimes, the first area where your pet defecates will be the only area where it should go during succeeding bowel eliminations. After a few days, take a few newspapers from the floor. Continue doing this until only a small piece of paper is left. Your puppy will defecate here permanently, and will eventually learn to control bladder and bowel elimination at your home. Instead of newspapers, you may cover the floors with special pads that attract dogs to eliminate. You may use other pet supplies such as litter trays and pet nappies to help in the house-training process.
House-training is important if you want to keep your home clean and orderly. For your dog, learning this task will be a rewarding experience. All it takes to house-train your puppy is a little patience. This may not work the first time, but you will soon get it perfectly.
