In his natural environment the horse has access to a wide range of vegetation. Different grasses, legumes and herbs which not only meet his energy requirements but also provide the broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals needed for general health and vitality. Unfortunately modern pastures rarely provide more than a couple of grass species and few legumes or herbs. In addition vitamins and minerals are frequently lost in the processing and storage of modern concentrated diets. Therefore supplementation of vitamins, minerals and trace elements is recommended for all horses regardless of workload. Feeding a vitamin supplement alone is not adequate as minerals and trace elements are the nutrients most likely to be low, or out of balance, in both the concentrate diet and the available grazing.
